I also have a bubble that is being compressed on the "short end" of the pieces. Do you know the remedy for that?

Nope, just use your oscillating tool to cut the grove and slip it in.

I wasn't aware that laminate floors expand and contract. That's what real solid hardwood flooring does, not laminate

Yes, laminate does expand and contract. That is why the manufacturers tell you to leave expansion room.

NOT true. Read the manufacturer's instructions. Laminates do expand and contract.
