Good morning. Needed help with this re-plumbing project. I opened up walls and figured why not right? I want to keep the same bathroom layout. Vanity and tub/shower has 1.5in drain pipes. Toilet has 4in drain and main stack is 4in. The vanity and tub/shower are not individually vented. That's the basic situation. I do have pics and a video below.

My question is, should I keep the same sizes? Should I switch anything like fittings? Should I rerun the pipes through the middle of joists? I will replace with ABS. I will also add a vent for the vanity and tie into the main stack. I will also do this for the kitchen sink as it wasn't vented also. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. PS I am sistering full length joists and reinforcing framing components before redoing to plumbing.

Your job looks quite similar to my upstairs bathroom plumbing when I redid the whole house 5 years ago. I left all the old drain lines and replaced all the incoming lines in the whole house with PEX.

I didn’t remove much of the old pipe that was buried in structure and just ran the PEX where it was easiest to get in and also easier to get at if it ever needed service.

I just added in structure as you are doing where it looks like it could use it and did the bounce test on floors. Got rid of the old K&T wire.

Your adding vents sounds like a good plan.

Now is the time to add new electrical GFCI and all that and do insulation and level the new ceiling.

Looks good so far.

Thanks for the reply. I added 4 joists so far and ripped out the plywood. Slow but fun. Will post pics when I can decrease their sizes in a few days so others can see progress.

I'd leave the existing plumbing as long as there are no issues. But I would replace the tub drain/trap and pop up assembly while it's accessible.
