My roofer is replacing rotten fascia, soffit and rafters (supposedly) but is this normal?
*Where the corners meet he's applied .5 inches to 2 inches of caulk.

* Some areas look like they have just been painted over the rot.

i understand that gutters will cover it so it doesn't matter if it looks bad, but will it be water safe?

Welcome to the forum. Wish I had a better answer for you.

It does not look well done at all to me from what you have shown us and IMO will not hold up long term.

Thanks for the response. Before all this i had beautiful fascia and crown moulding, but terrible gutters. Now it will be the opposite i guess. Either way i suppose i will have a rotten roof unless i figure out my next step.

First off, :welcome: to House Repair Talk.

The "repairs" he made with a 2-5" caulk joint will fail. I wouldn't accept it on my house and neither should you. Do not give final payment until you are completely satisfied with his work. And remember, you get more flies with honey than vinegar.

Thank you!

I spoke to him and he said he did it to keep bugs out until he could get to it (but i don't understand why he started painting it and around it. )
I thanked him and am going to just go along with it and make sure to take pictures and keep an eye on the progress in case anything else weird happens.

I was assuming this was his finished work and not that there was more to do. Is the plan to add aluminum or vinyl over this work to finish the job. If that is the case the painting is more of a spot primer to seal up where needed and the filling of the big cracks to keep out bugs sounds more logical depending on what material he used.

Using painter's caulk in small holes is normal... if you wanted fascia boards replaced, or new metal fascia under the gutters, that would have had to have been specified in the contract... at extra cost, of course...
