cup-thing on the side of furnace and pipes going into it

Hi there.

What is the cup-thing on the side of the furnace? It is full of water and overflows into a drain pipe.

I think the flexible black pipe is from the AC. It drips water. Should it be placed into the cup as shown in the photo?

What are the 2 white rigid pipes above the cup (not the drain pipe)?

yes it is a condensate drain , It needs back pressure to work.
 
Why back pressure?
because the air inside the duct work is under pressure (2-5 inches presure ) so if it is a regular trap the pressure would push the water out of the way and therfore leak air out . I remember back in the day i wiuld make traps of 11 inches in dept to avoid this .
