shower drain question

Hi everyone, I'm re-doing a small shower stall....down to the floor joists and it's time to rough in the drain for a Kerdi shower pan. My space is 36x32, roughly, and I'm trying to get the drain as close to center as possible, tapping in to existing 2" drain line.
My question is: Can I reverse the sanitary elbow on my p-trap to shrink the profile a little and bring me to center? (Instead of having a short piece of 2" pvc between the male adapter and the elbow, I go right into the adapter with the sanitary, then put the piece of connector between the elbow and the"P". Does that make sense? I'll try to get pictures , but I gotta go get a fresh p-trap 'cause I glued it first, then had this idea!

Is the first configuration what you need to make it work? I was always under the impression that drains should flow like shown in the second pic to reduce a chance of blockage at the rough edges of the connecting pipe.

My plumber installed the riser (in the wall) to high for my triple bowl sink connection and he reversed the trap to make it work. Later I installed a rubber trap as the drains always seemed to have a bit of a strain on them. No drain problems with either.

The first one is preferred strictly in terms of geometry; it gets my drain closer to dead-center in the shower, but I think the second one is more correct. It keeps the self-scouring feature of the design. ...probably the safer bet.
