why do people set up couches and TVs in their garages?

I think guys do this so they can have a separate space for them to watch ball games or play video games

That way, the wife or kids can have the living room and the man of the house can have his man cave out in the garage

Now I know why my wife and I got along so well. I didn't waste time with ball games and have never played a video game. We spent Thanksgiving and Christmas together.

Well, when I get around to building the home I'm planning.... she will have one side of the house and I'll have the other.

The kitchen and living room will be one big room in the middle, and I'll have a shop out back... which will be built first before the house.

All this is so I can stay out of her way... I ain't looking to irritate anybody cool_shades.gif

This is what my brother does. He has an old lazy boy in the garage an a TV. Usually the TV is on while he thinkers but sometimes he will sit and watch. Sort of like my shop but I don't have a lazy boy or couch.

As far as the maintenance on a McClaren, if you can drop $200 - $500k on a car you only drive once in a while you can probably afford the maintenance.

Yeah, you don't normally see those rich guys getting their hands dirty!

But,. my financial ship may have come in! I got an email from a guy in Nigeria that is a lawyer over there and he has a client originally from the US that passed away and the guy's widow need to move $36 million to the US

They want to use someone's bank account to do this and they will give 20% so I could make $7.2 million bucks on the deal! This could sure come in handy for building a home! cool4.gif

I still don't get it. If I wanted to watch something my wife or kids didn't want to watch, I'd watch it and they'd go do something else. Same if they wanted to watch something I don't want to watch. (Or, here's a wild idea: one of us could just try watching what the other one wants to watch, because compromise is part of life and you never know, you might like a new thing if you try it.) Does everyone absolutely have to be able to watch exactly what they want right this very second? Do they have nothing else they can possibly do with their time?

It makes even less sense in a world where there's 1) streaming everything (so you can watch whatever you want whenever you want to), 2) everyone has a TV and video game console in their pocket. (Or in my case one that can be folded up and tucked under one arm since I use a flip phone but have a laptop).

I also never got how people could listen to music or TV while they work. In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance Robert Pirsig writes about how he can always tell the really good mechanics because they never have music or TV or anything on in their shop. I find it impossible to concentrate with music on, whether I'm doing woodworking or my day job.

I'd watch it and they'd go do something else.

That's the difference... apparently your wife and kids are really nice

In many households though, this is not the case so in order to keep the peace, some guys need their own space away from the rest of the family.,

It's not being "really nice" it's just basic living with other people. And those guys can't just go to the basement or their bedroom or office or hell just sit on the john if they're so desperate for alone time? Or just watch what others want to watch for once? They have to buy big screen TVs and couches and make their wives park the car outside in the rain and snow? Still don't get it.

That's why you aren't getting it.... your family understands living with others and allowing family members to have their own space and desires. Sounds like there is love in your family towards each other.

Many families don't do that because each family member is all about themselves and they walk all over other family members so they can have their own way at all costs, whatever it takes and there ain't no love between family members.

It sounds like your family are normal people that care for one another... many other families it's just the opposite.

I guess I live a sheltered life because all of my friends have families like Flyover and me.

Maybe so, but now you see why I don't get why people buy TVs and couches to put in their garages!

From the time I was 18, I had to park my car out in the open, either on the street or in a driveway or under a carport because I lived in apartment complexes. And mostly in places with awful weather too.

Finally in my early 30s I was able to buy my first house, and it had something no house I'd ever lived in had: an attached garage! Neither of my parents nor my grandparents had ever had an attached garage either. To be able to park your car, get out, walk through a door, and be in your home without ever having to step outside! Amazing! And then you don't really have to lock your car doors, either.

What some people throw away.

Ok, back to the actual topic... I half paid attention to a commercial last night about the "Never ending Pasta Bowl" or whatever from Olive Garden. First of all, there is no Fake Italian food place around here, so I was zoning out on it to begin with, but then the price caught me... "Starting at $13.99"!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why do people buy that????

I will have to watch for it again to make sure that was accurate, but lets just say it was... WHO will pay THAT for pasta? If you're RICH, you don't go to Fake Italian microwaved pre packaged Olive Garden! If you're middle class, you probably don't eat out much anymore because of the gigantic prices, but if it were "All you can eat Prime Rib", then I wouldn't be typing...

I can go get a box of Pasta at any store for a couple of bucks and be full... Period. That's the value to me for a place like Olive Garden.

Put a sign out front of your house (All the pasta you can eat $5) you will make a million bucks in no time.

Pay $1 sell for $5 that’s 4X profit daily x 360 You need a few days off.

Easily $1,000,000 if you reinvest in first year.:)

That is literally what they do. The fancy shmancy Chinese joint here that runs ads constantly is just microwaved pre packed stuff also. I have had their Beef Broccoli, and I have had the boxed frozen version from Walmart... It tastes exactly the same.

So, if I'm going to pay for their staff, their lighting, their parking lot, their bathrooms etc., then they will fresh cook everything I order, or I don't go there. Sadly, there is very limited options with that, but I seek out Mom and Pop fresh cooking joints wherever I am.

I don't eat out these days, and only did so when traveling on business before. Regardless, as a general rule of thumb, I prefer to eat in places where I can see the kitchen and the folks cooking. This ensures freshly cooked food and that they actually try to keep the place clean and decent. In some countries that's the only way I'll eat in there actually.

Why do people buy expensive coffee with artificial flavors added?

I bought dinner for 4 at a tiny Italian place in Manhattan about 10 years ago. With a bottle of wine and a couple of beers it was $375 before the tip. I about crapped when they brought me the bill. It was all fresh pasta and was crazy good but come on it was still pasta, and certainly not all you could eat. $14 doesn't sound too bad when you put it that way. BTW I'm not an Olive Garden fan at all. There is a local Italian hole in the wall place here that is really good. Otherwise I rarely buy pasta when dining out for the same reasons you stated.

Yes, 100%... I went to a local Pizza joint 10 years ago or so and saw one of the cooks rub the sweat off his forehead with his hand and then go back to the dough. Of course I reported it, but have never been back. That's too bad, they had the best pie in town.

Yes... Starchuckers is notorious for horrible tasting Coffee, so they bombard it with Sugar and colorings and other garbage. People line up to pay for it though. I can't imagine buying stuff like that.
