hot water heater does not light

Anyone know why my hot water heater will not light and stay lit.i can hear the gas when i have it on pilot and push the red button down ?

If it lights and then goes out when you let up on the red nob, this could be many things. Do you have a good blue flame that goes around the thermocouple about 1/2"? If so you could have a bad thermocouple, or the magnet in the gas valve is week, so you would have to replace the valve.
If you have a good flame, make sure the thermocouple is pushed into the flame. Make sure the thermocouple is tight in the valve Does your thermocouple have any wires going from the cable? Paul
