So I bought a house a week about and the living room is plaster and I think the room ceilings are wood with a skim count of plaster over them. Am I better off scraping it all down and redoing it again with plaster or pathing the spot and try matching the pattern or can I just scrape it all down and paint over the wood as if it where sheet rock. I have can hang dry wall sparkle and all that but have no experience with plaster at all. Any ideas are helpful. Thanks

Depending upon how much you have remaining to remove, will be your yardstick.

If you do remove you'll need to patch all the cracks and separations, or simply layout all the ceiling joists and cover the ceiling with 3/8" drywall.
 
Take a shot at repairing and if that doesn't work then you might have to bite the bullet.
 
I think Neal is right. If the surface and surrounding area are sound, then use lightweight drywall compound and apply a skim coat (or two). Use a sanded ceiling paint to match the existing ceiling.

I had one like this, i repaired but it keeped on recurring some times in the same spot other in a new spot it I found it easier to install new drywall over the whole ceiling.
