I’m wondering if anybody has some helpful ideas with my lawn. This actually started to happen last summer. I have a lawn care service that fertilize the lawn certain periods throughout the year. The line from them is that all this will get better or if not they will simply over seed.

It is so patchy I’m wondering if over seeding would be the right option or am I going to have to look toward something more drastic?
It’s also funny that this is only a central area in my backyard surrounded by decent grass, i’ll be at none of the grass looks entirely healthy yet.
We live in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s outside of Reno Nevada.
Moved from a Nebraska where you actually had to make a concerted effort to try not to have a nice lawn:)

The lawn company must have put down something that eliminates weedy grasses and the decent stuff that's left hasn't had a chance to fill in yet. I wouldn't panic, unless your daughter is getting married on the lawn next month. :rolleyes:
 
If you just started the lawn service you need to give them some time for the lawn to develop into an even lush carpet of grass. I've been using TruGreen for my second year now, I aerated and overseeded in the fall, the normal time to do it here, and this year looks much better than last year.

A couple of years ago I top dressed much of the front yard with commercially produced compost throwing down several pick-up loads and then overseeding. That made a huge difference as well. If I have time this fall I'm thinking of getting 10 or more yards of commercial compost delivered and top dressing the whole yard. The yard is 19 years old this year from bare clay after the construction of the house. Adding compost and aeration do a lot to improve and loosen the soil.
 
Talked with the lawn guys. Owner came buy and looked. His thoughts were there was a big thatch problem in certain areas and the soil harderned quite a bit. He also said there was evidence of past seeding with a couple types of grass that are not very good choices. Anyhow, said hey will aerate now and again in fall. Recommended I add a light dusting of compost too and they will over seed in fall. Guess we’ll have to wait it out and hopefully next spring things will be awesome
