A while back I replaced an old sump pump that had the motor raised a few feet (pedestal sump pump). I read that those were typically cheaper, less robust pumps, so I ended up with a submersible Liberty. ( Even though the old, non submersible had lasted decades - maybe original to house 55 years, and was still running) One advantage (or disadvantage, depending on how you look at it) is that you can hear when the non submersible is running. And since when is putting an electric motor underwater a good idea ?

Since it helps keep it cool and has been designed to be submerged commonly includes moisture sensors to detect seal failure. Typically have very good track record and found to be most popular for a reason.

If your area suffers frequent power outages or you have a fully finished basement area that would be very badly damaged by even shallow flooding then you may want to consider a water powered backup sump pump if you have a utility furnished water supply. If the water ever rises above the trip point of your electric sump pump a float opens the valve that sends the pressurized water through a Venturi device which uses the vacuum effect caused by the flowing water to pull the water out of the sump and expel it outside. With utility water supply it is very rare for the water supply to fail. The water powered backup sump pump will run as long as the pressurized water source is available.

If you are using electrically powered water supply then you will have to resort to stored or locally produced power to run the back up pump. The problem is the batteries sold with most battery powered sump pumps do not last long enough to deal with prolonged power outages. If you are going to depend on one then do the calculation of how long it will run and match the battery capacity to the longest power outage you are likely to be subjected to. Always use Deep cycle batteries for this type of load. An automotive Starting, Lighting, & Ignition (SLI) battery will be destroyed in 1 or 2 uses if deep cycled. If you can afford it, and the value at risk is worth it, consider using Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. They are quite expensive but they are still cost effective because they can go through so many more Discharge / Recharge cycles before they will need replacement.

Once you start looking at enough battery capacity to outlast prolonged outages you may want to consider an automatic starting generator instead or a manual start generator with one of the more limited run time battery powered sump pumps to keep the water at bay until you can start the manual generator.

I'm a retired electrician and I still recommend the water powered back up were utility water supply is available.
