In the front inside of my house, I have a front foyer with a ceiling light and switch, and an upstairs landing with a ceiling light and switch. Both lights can be turned on or off with either switch.

A couple nights ago I came home to find both lights on though I had turned them off when I left earlier. Neither switch will turn the lights off. So I took the bulbs out for now. Am I correct in guessing one or both of the switches have gone bad and need to be replaced?

Thanks!

Vince

Could very well be, or a loose connection and a short.

Not common for you not be able to use at least one switch to turn them off.
What type of switch are they? normal flip switches or smart switches?

Thanks Joe. They are normal flip switches, probably 15-20 years old. There is nothing smart in this house as it was built without plumbing or electricity about 123 years ago!

Oddly enough, last night I had a kitchen light switch sort of stay on even though the switch was flipped to the off side. I will buy a couple new switches and see what they do. Of course, I'll turn off the electricity when I do that!

You have three way switches. Make sure you note which wire is on the common terminal when you remove them. The common terminal may not be in the same position of your new switches. The common terminal is the black one or marked common.
