I've heard metal roofs described as "lifetime." Is this true?

In that case, why not put a metal roof on everything?

I’m 63 and just put a metal roof on our house last year and I’m counting on it being lifetime. If not lifetime I’m counting on being too old to care.

If you want true lifetime when I was in Italy I asked my friend I was seeing how long the tile roofs last over there. He said hop in the car we drove around and said see that one its 8th century see that one its 7th century finally we pulled up and stopped and he said 5th century it didn’t look bad.

Any roof system life span is only as good as the installation practices that were followed. Copper is described as a 100 year life span, metal roofs have paint ratings from 20 -50 year paint warranties. Exposed fastners have less of a lifecycle than snap-lock or true standing seam.

5th century. Was this before or after Rome was destroyed?

Did you know Italy built towers instead of castles as their defensive fortifications? These proved very effective until the French invaded with cannons in 1494 and knocked them all down in about 2 seconds.

Now of course there was no "Italy" until 1871, but I mean the lands that are now called Italy.

Had to do a quick Google search to find out why metal roofs won't conduct lightning. I guess it makes sense.

Repainting a roof in the future will be no trouble.:D

I could have used one of those when I was a kid. ;)

I put a little galvanized steel roof on the garage a built in 1990. Nothing special just regular ripped galvanized sheet with no paint. I took the building down last summer 2017,and I even kept the roof panels they were in such good shape. About all I can say about it was there was some rust beginning, nothing pitted just the beginning’s. I could’ve thrown a coat of paint on it and put it all up again.
For fasteners I had Your typical drill driver driven sealed self tapping roof screws. Those were startingTo show some rust but they weren’t in any way compromise to including the seals. I’ll listen New York state where the weather is lousy it rains constantly and snows and it is damp Much of the time.
Now my house has a 30 year shingles installed in 1995. I’ve had the typical where you’d expect and they’re still OK but I did get tired of putting shingles back on to get popped off by the winds we have here.

Down in Florida, "30 year shingles" doesn't even mean 30 years. If it's 15 years old, it's considered near the end of it's life.

I've had people refuse to buy a house from me because the roof was from 2002 and it was too old for them.
