I live in a second floor condo. We have central air, it works great to cool off the living room, bathroom and kitchen, but the bedroom just does not get cool. When I put my hand in front of the vents in the bedroom, it's maybe half or even less as strong as the vents in the living room. I've tried shutting the vents in the living room, and noticed no difference in the bedroom. Also some of the vents you just can't shut. Is there anything an HVAC company can do to strengthen the airflow to the vents in the bedroom?

There may be dampers in the ducts where they branch off, these can be adjusted to direct more flow to the bedroom and less to the other areas. There are also booster fans that can be installed inline in the ductwork to push more air to the bedrooms. Is your condo all on one floor? Do you have access to the air handler? Where is the air handler in relation to the other rooms?

Thanks for the advice. Yes my condo is all on one floor. Theres a central air unit outside, then the air handler, if I'm thinking of the right box, is in a closet in the living room, all the way on the opposite side of the bedroom. I was thinking maybe this is why it's so weak in the bedroom?

There are usually dampers right at the main plenum that allow you to adjust how much airflow goes down each individual duct. Adjusting here works better than just closing off the damper. I'd have your HVAC tech look at it when you get your annual service. You do get an annual service on it right? First thing would be to adjust the dampers, second option would be a booster fan in the affected ducts. The air handler should be able to push air around a single story condo.

I am guessing the bed room is the furthest away from he a/c unit?

I would bet it’s either a closed volume damper, detached duct, or crushed duct. Check for closed dampers, problem is these are usually at your supply grills in condos so what you have already found is likely all there is, but I have seen some condos where they put inline volume dampers as well as butterfly dampers at the grills, although it’s not common because it’s rather pointless in most all scenarios.

On new construction I often see crushed and detached ducts. Often not as easy as a fix as we would like it to be but hopefully if that is found to be the issue then building warranty will take care of it. Make sure you make mention of it ASAP if it is warranty (and be the squeaky wheel)
