Well as I mentioned this is an unusual house. I was modeled after a stable building at a near by estate that once belonged to the founders of Champion Spark Plug. Now its a Metro park. The people that built it , and we bought it from, were....let's say "different." So the house is only about 25' front to back. One end of the building is a 2 car attached garage and a large laundry room/ studio. There are 2 bedrooms and a full bath above that. All that is serviced by one furnace, no AC system, though it is set up to receive one. Next to that there is a section of the house in the middle that has an OH door front an back and you can open them and actually drive through the building if you wanted to. Beyond that you have basically one large room about 25'x55'. All the bedrooms and 2 full baths are up and the whole thing sits on 2 crawls separated by the center section that is on a slab at grade. So out the front of the house there are a lot of windows looking over several acres of landscaped yard and pond. Out the back you have all wooded area and again a lot of windows. So if I were to add to the house out the back I would obliterate a bunch of windows and the view. So the only way to avoid that is to continue the structure off the (west) end. That would provide a conservatory space, more like a 4 season room I guess, a new laundry/utility area, and a master bed/bath space.
Some of the length is due to some problems with the well location. I need to have a hallway that connects to the bedroom to stay away from the well head. I'm weighing the option of relocating the well to help with floor plan options. While I would never have built this house like this it is unique and I don't want to totally destroy the architectural look of the house. My thought was to almost make the bedroom look like a separate structure to some degree. It is not a simple slap on another room type of expansion. Trying to preserve the original design and feel has been a challenge. I attached a picture of the front of the house. It's from before we took possession so it pretty overgrown.
