Best way to treat garage door lintel?

I’ve noticed the steel plate above my garage door (think it’s called a lintel) which provides support for the bricks is starting to rust and slight bow down. What’s the best way to prep and treat this so it won’t get worse? Should this be caulked or do I leave it open so water can drain from above?

Are there any cracks or voids in the mortar above on the wall? Do you notice any white chalky spots on the brick?
 
I don’t see any voids and no white chalky spots. Just noticing it is starting to rust and guessing I need to do something.
 
I'd clean the rust with a wire brush and use a rust inhibiting primer and repaint. To see if it is actually bowing I'd put a long straight edge on it to see if it is in-fact bowing.
 
It's common and has to be addressed every couple years. What I did to mine, same issue u had, just sand it down real good wire brush get the surface rust off, wipe it down a few times and prime and paint with a rustolium sealer that's it. No caulk because that's too risky and you're right about needing that water to drain somewhere.
