I noticed this black junk which I assume is some type of sealant, but most likely the wrong stuff as it is obviously not high temp rates as u can see in the pic it looks to be IMG_9310.JPG IMG_9311.JPG burnt/melted a bit. I noticed it in January and closely monitored it to avoid any incidents. Thing that worries me is that where it's melted is right above the heat shield that's above the burner on that side. What is this crap? It has a weird texture to it and is a little gummy! Already got a guy coming out to tune and clean it all up before winter I just wanted to check here first. Thanks

That is what we call in the trades "dumb dumb".
It's a sealant/insulation.
You don't want to remove it.

It’s Cork Tape. It’s a flexible type insulation used in air conditioning installations and they have used it to plug some holes as well. It stays soft and flexible, and loves to stick to your fingers and you don’t want it on your clothes. What I see in the photos is not a concern.
