I've done some remodeling and now the rain from my roof near my front door that used to drain rapidly, tends to pool. With a good heavy rain, like we get in a hurricane, 6-10 inches in a few hours, unless I do something to move the water from the front door area, we could get water in our living room.

Landscape architect and landscape contractor both suggested some kind of dry well, or french drain. I can't put in a french drain because there is a drivewy to contend with, but I am going to jack up the sidewalk, dig a substantial trench where the sidewalk used to be,fill it with rock and gravel.

The idea is to allow the water to drain through the rock and down into the ground instead of pool on the concrete, and rise toward the house itself...only a few inches actually.

If any has experience with a dry bed...I'd appreciate any insight. Essentially we will have a 2 ft wide, 2-3 ft deep trench, lined with filter cloth, filled 1/2 way with large rocks/gravel...golf ball size, then filter cloth, then smaller gravel to the top.

The belief is that the trench will be deep enough to allow the water to drain..I can imagine a 10 -12 inch rain in a day or two, but not a 36" rain in a day or two.

Anyway, any input appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

It sounds like you've got it covered---maybe even overkill which is good!

Good call.
Another thing to remember is to have your gutters working the right way.
Make sure water is actually entering the gutter, not running behind it. And getting those downspouts to run at least 8 feet away from the house helps more than you know. Considering the amount of water that comes off a roof, if you do both of these, you should be rid of any standing water.:)
And do not connect it to your new dry well, that's too much water.
