The cement wall in our basement has two holes where I think some gas or water came in the house. We've been noticing a lot of mice in the house and it looks like they're coming in through these holes. The holes go through the width of the wall and I'd like to cement them shut. Any thoughts on how to do this
 
Go to your local hardware or big box store and pick up a box of quick setting concrete patching material. Mix the stuff up with water and apply to your holes. Smooth it off and inside 30 minutes it will be hard. Don't mix to much as it will set up quickly. If you have access to the outside you can do that side as well. I use it as patching for filling holes or sealing around pipes etc. all the time.
 
Right on going to the store for concrete patching material, but what is best to use will depend on how wide the crack is. However, before you do just that, you need to check if there are any underlying issues causing the cracks. If there is none, you can follow the steps detailed on later part of this page: clean and remove any dirt on the crack, get the material and follow instructions on how it should be mixed, gently apply on the cracks to be sure you have everything covered. The hours you need to leave it alone depends on your choice of filler.
 
Mix the concrete patch a little thick when filling a horizontal hole. If the hole is somewhat large, it will try to fall out as you fill it. Don't sweat it --- do as best you can, and when it dries, put another layer to get your patch flush with the inside wall.
