Dear Experts,

I believe my 2nd story gable is missing two half size end tiles, I think they fell off! I see other homes in my area that have these end tiles. You can see in the attached photos some water damage on one side and possibly a bird nest. I think those end tiles are suppose to meet the gutters. One roofer wants $2,500 to repair both ends. He said on the one end with damage he would cut out a couple feet of the damaged plywood and replace that - made sense to me. However, that seems like a lot of money for what will likely be less than 1/2 a day of work. It is really high. What do you guys think? I have some carpentry skills, not a carpenter though and I know little about roofs. Could this repair be done from a boom?

Thanks!
Brett

Note, the last photo is from a similar home that has those half size end tiles.

Welcome.
If you are thinking of renting the boom, do a cost budget.

RE photo #3. It always astounds me, when CCX ply is used as starter board, instead of 1x.

Thanks for your reply. I'm more worried about me doing the work safely and correctly. I've been looking at the JLG T350 Home Depot rents for $319 a day + an extra $198 if you can't tow 3400 lbs. I have some trees around that complicate things a little bit. I'm not keen on having that boom parked partly in the street while I'm working at 25'. I have some siding on the chimney I'd like to replace. I did some lower stuff after reading about it and I thought that was pretty easy. The siding also has to get painted.

I posted another photo of the eve. Seems like the roof support beam extends a few feet over the side of the house and they just layed the sheathing on top of that forming the eve. They put some other support boards in there. You're thinking they should use a couple of 1x's for the Soffit? Just curious.

Thanks,
Brett

Good, sounds like you have a plan.

The comment re the starter board was an expression of frustration, with tradesmen who take the easy way out. The only time I have ever used CCX ply for starter board is when the eaves were boxed, no weather exposure, other than that, it's always 1x.

I found a roofer that I liked that did the repair and more. He discovered when he pulled back the tiles on that one side of the gable the builder never finished the valley. He cleaned it out, extended it, repaired the damaged soffit, and cleaned out the other side. They also fixed some broken tiles for me. It was 2 guys for about 4 hours. $2,200 I wouldn't have been able to do it, especially at that height.

It's always good to hear when a project is accomplished satisfactorily.
