Thank you for adding me to House Repair Talk!

I've recently retired and my wife and I moved back home to Topeka, KS. We purchased a 96 year old craftsman-style home in a great historic neighborhood. I grew up in a home where we did all the home repairs ourselves--plumbing, electrical, roofing, framing, etc. My dad was phenomenal; I am a novice. I've done a lot of house repair myself, but also know my limits!

Our 1926 house is solid but needs some restoration, improvements, updates, and TLC.

I look forward to gaining insight, wisdom, and ideas from this group.

Bruce

Welcome to the forum!

Hi Bruce and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like we are similar in age and have some new found time on our hands and projects to fill the time with. We did quite the similar to the house we are in now only it was circa 1880s. I also watched my dad as a kid build our family home and work full time while raising 3 kids. That generation knew how to get things done. I’m sure no TV or internet helped.

I started a thread I post to now and then and welcome others to document their projects there as well if they wish. Or start your own thread with a running account of what you are doing. We love photos here before and after and in a way if you post before pics the guys will stay on you to finish up so they can see the results. You might even get some good advice along the way. I know I have.

Jump right into the current threads as well. There is not much we won’t talk about.

Here is the thread I mentioned.

Thank you!

Welcome.

In my mid-20s my parents moved into a 80 year old house in South Central PA between Harrisburg and Gettysburg. We then proceeded to renovate the whole thing between DIY and hired. I learned a lot on that project, mainly never to buy an old house. Dad's health wasn't great but his knowledge on building was pretty good. He was an industrial electrician who had done a fair amount of residential moonlighting when he was younger. I went to technical school to be an electrician but never earned a living doing it. Since that project I've finished several basements, built a couple of decks and built a couple of screen porches. I've volunteered with Appalachian Service Project, Habitat for Humanity, Gulf Coast hurricane relief and led several major renovation projects at our church and children's private school..

The wealth of knowledge here is good. It's a pretty friendly group.
