    Choosing a replacement water heater

Got news from the plumber today that our water heater is on its way out and needs to be replaced very soon. That lines up with some of the problems we've been noticing, so I trust his opinion. We have a choice between spending about 2000-3000 on a conventional tank heater & install or 5000-6000...

Safe way to get spray paint off eyeglasses?

Yesterday I was doing a bit of spray painting outside and it was windy and now I notice my plastic-lens glasses are covered in tiny flecks of dried paint. Spritzing with eyeglass cleaner and rubbing with a glasses cleaning cloth doesn't seem to have gotten much of it off. I'm hoping it just...

    What did you do today?

Finished sawing down that tree. Was pressured by certain members of my household to borrow neighbor's chainsaw for the sake of expedience. Aside from the switch to power tools, all went exactly as planned. The branches and logs are piled up waiting to be cut and chopped. The stump will be...

How much to repair water hammer?

How much to repair water hammer?

I'll try and check the pressure later. It's city water. No recent plumbing work. I don't have a pressure tank, that I know of. ** I know it will be impossible for anyone to provide an exact estimate via this forum, I was just hoping to get a realistic range based on as much info as I can...

How much to repair water hammer?

We're having a plumber out next week to fix the water hammer noise we've experienced in this house whenever water is turned on and off. I'd like to get some idea of what a reasonable estimate is, so I know if they're trying to rip us off. We have a ~1300ft ranch, beam-on-pier with a crawlspace...

    What did you do today?

Got all the big branches down, my plan worked pretty flawlessly. The only unexpected thing was that when I sawed almost all the way through, the branches wanted to sit on the saw and pinch it, so I had to wiggle the saw out and then kinda push and twist on the branches until they were free to...

    What did you do today?

If I can get a hold of my neighbor's extension ladder I'm going to cut down a dead tree by myself today. Or at least take down one of the big main branches that's pointing a little too threateningly at my house. Before anyone inquires about my funeral arrangements, know that I do have a plan...

    Last-minute DIY bathroom floor

@slownsteady Well, sort of. Removing/replacing the toilet would have been easy except the previous owners (ugh) installed it without a wax seal (!!) so it was disgusting and all rotted away under there. After I scraped away all the shards of corroded flange and shop-vacked up the debris, I...

    Last-minute DIY bathroom floor

@slownsteady I believe they are vinyl. They came with a cork backing, if that helps. The contractors who saw them both said they don't need underlayment. I completed the project today. Knocked a few firsts off my list with this one: vanity install, toilet remove/replace, flooring install, and...

So, silicone between the flooring and shower base, and gorilla glue between the quarter round and the shower base?

    Last-minute DIY bathroom floor

Update #2: I am going to do the floor myself after all. The kicker was thinking about strangers parading in and out of my house during a pandemic. Question: I'm going to put quarter-round down along the baseboard after the floor is installed. Currently there's no baseboard along the front of...

    Last-minute DIY bathroom floor

@slownsteady: I hear ya. That, plus saving a few hundred bucks and the satisfaction of ownership, is what I've got in the "do it myself" column as well. Unfortunately there's a long list of stuff in the other column this time around. But who knows, I'll run the idea past my wife again. I'm...

    Last-minute DIY bathroom floor

We were supposed to get the floor in our (very small, <35ft^2) master bathroom installed today. It will be vinyl planks (or laminate? not sure), cork-backed. Advertised as waterproof, for use in bathrooms. I know some of you here don't like the cork-backed stuff, but we've already purchased them...

    What did you do today?

Well, a shady employer is a shady employer I guess. They're sort of breaking the law by not reimbursing him. From the way you describe his financial situation he could probably qualify for the free legal help that's often offered by law schools and sometimes by large churches and other...

    What did you do today?

It might vary by state, but usually by law the employer must reimburse employees if the employer makes employees get tests that cost money. I know this is true for drug tests, no reason it wouldn't be true for others.

Resources to DIY an exterior window?

@Snoonyb: I'll try and snap some pics later. Just curious, what do you think a photo would tell you that my description hasn't? (Oh, forgot to add: it's vinyl siding, and the house is about 40 years old.)
