Does my yard need professional care?

The stuff growing in the rock gardens is easy --- Roundup will kill them. After that, it gets a lot harder. That "lawn" is a write-off. The broadleaf weeds are easy to kill, but you have a lot more going on than just dandelions and thistle. To do that yard properly, first hire a guy to...

    My deck is collapsing.

That's not a 15 degree lean on your beam, its about 5 degrees. Photo of where the beam is attached to the support post might be useful. Something might be moving. But it seams to be moving towards the house, which does not really sound like its pulling away. Could be the post is leaning...

    My deck is collapsing.

Some pictures would help. I question if your footings are crumbling. Possibly some spalling at the upper surface due to freeze/thaw in the winter. Wood is likely cheap pressure treated pine. It cracks, splits, warps, commonly, but is rarely a structural problem. Leaning beam can be a...

    Let's talk Grass Seed

Are you doing patching, or starting an entire new lawn from scratch ? If you are doing patching, you first need to figure out what kind of grass you have, and buy the same type, or it can look poor to have a patch of different type of grass. You have to read the label on the bag to see what...

    Tesla Achilles Heel

If the use of oil decreases, there will be a glut of oil on the market, and the feedstock for making plastics will decrease in price, not increase. I believe significant amounts of the naphtha used in plastic is from oil, but I think mostly it comes from natural gas anyways. All that sounds...

    Tesla Achilles Heel

They already recycle the thousands of pounds of steel and aluminum in a car. Batteries will be easier because there is less mixture with unwanted materials. Companies are already popping up that recycle the battery materials.

Very cool (as we used to say).

    Tesla Achilles Heel

In 2020, 75% of new car sales in Norway were electric. 45% in Iceland. 32% in Sweden. I read that Couche-Tard, that owns a lot of those gas stations/variety stores, is experimenting with putting charging ports at their stores. They can see the day, that a lot of people stop coming to...

    Tesla Achilles Heel

I guess it depends on where you are. I know in Ontario, we have an excess of electric power. Coal power is long gone. About 10% of electricity is from natural gas (which is one of the cleaner hydrocarbons) and the rest is non carbon emitting.

    Tesla Achilles Heel

25 gallons of gasoline going up in flames is not a good thing either. Root of the problem is a vehicle needs to carry a whole lot of energy. Be it as a fossil fuel, battery, supercapacitor, or whatever.

    Water issues. Regrading around foundation?

But how is your wet sill plate going to hold up ? https://foundationhandbook.ornl.gov/handbook/section4-1.shtml#:~:text=The%20slab%20should%20also%20be,drainage%20is%20not%20always%20necessary.

    Water issues. Regrading around foundation?

Code in just about any location requires the top of the foundation to be a minimum of 6" higher than grade. I'm not positive about the reasoning, but suppose its because there will be certain amount of splashing when it rains, and there will be a tendency to wet (and then possibly rot) the...

Best adhesive for mirror to plain hollow core door?

You possibly have plastic clips that mount over the mirror. Do a google search for "concealed mirror clips". The lower clips are fixed, the upper clips are two-piece sliding, sometimes spring loaded. I know people do it anyways, but if you read the instructions on any mirror adhesive, it...

OK to use highest rated filter?

From a Middle School online lesson - below : But it is important to note that there must be motion for work to have been performed. If you just push on the back of a truck, no work has been performed if it does not move. If you don't have motion, one can invert the W to an M and say M=FxD...

OK to use highest rated filter?

No that concern is not realistic. My Armstrong manual specifically states to use a minimum MERV 11 filter.

    Garage weight bearing post

That looks like somebody's home made solution. A couple of things that look strange are the proportions of the beam --- wide and short in height. (although that could be just wood skirting around a steel beam and post). Also the location of the control cuts in the slam make me wonder if there...

Unsupported sill plate and a stupid engineer

You seem to be leaving out some of the information. A professional engineer normally gives a written report, not just a verbal. What did it say? Did it say that the footings were insufficient or non existing? Where did the helical piers idea come from ? Not sure I buy that the window doesn't...

Unsupported sill plate and a stupid engineer

I am no expert, but it doesn't take an expert to know there should be a steel lintel over those windows. So those windows were a retrofit ? Foundation Systems of Michigan sounds like they would be qualified to do that work. Going to lose at least 4" to 6" in height. Maybe just have one...

Sudden appearance of crack and some warping on drop down ceiling in Kitchen combined with weird random noises from attic.

That dropped portion of your ceiling does not look structural. Probably, if you go in your attic, you will see the ceiling joists are a foot above that dropped area, level with the rest of the ceiling The dropped area is possibly covering some ducts, pipes, or maybe just because at one point...
