LG refrigerator sounds like dirt bike

When the motor starts up it sounds like a fan is loaded down...but it's not all the time. Sometimes it just hums, but sometimes it fires up quite loudly. My hubby pulled her out and cleaned behind it, but said he couldn't figure anything out...so, like always it's up to me to figure it out! I...

    mixing 12 & 14 guage wires

It's ok to mix these, right? I'm using scrap for the new porch lights and some are 14 and some are 12. I can't think of why it would be a problem, but thought I'd check here. Thanks!

    adding 4-way switch

Hey y'all :) Happy New Year! We're in the final stages of our 'facade' work! Just have porch lights to go, and then call in the city to approve us for the grant! Woohoo! Now, to my question. We're adding (or would like to add) a 3rd switch to our foyer lighting. Two switches already...

    Aluminum door sill condensation?

The alumninum sill of our atrium door has developed a condensation problem. The wood floor up against it is absorbing this condensation. It's not much, but over time I'll bet there'd be some damage. What should I do about it? Thanks for any help!

    fuel line to furnace

I was doing some cleaning in the basement and noticed something about the line coming into my furnace...it's wrapped in duct tape in 2 places  Should I be worried about this? Should I replace the line? It looks like a copper line to me, all wavy and wonky.

    Kenmore oven broiler "bake element"

The 'bake element' in my oven went on the fritz last night. I was pre-heating, and while checking the temp on the inside thermometer, I saw flames sprouting from a 1 1/2" glowing section of the element. The flames had built up because I was standing there feeding it oxygen, so I shut her up...

    Anyone use solar lamp posts?

We've got solar pathway lights, they're pretty good. I'm looking for lamp posts now, anyone got some? They seem a little harder to find than pathway lighting. I did find a couple models that were post caps, that seems kinda cool too.

    Stone front porch

I'm having a hard time finding info on how to construct a stone porch. Does anyone out there know where I can find some info? Thanks! Oh, and here's a pic of what I'm thinking:

    James Hardie's Fiber Cement Siding

We're in the process of putting up the HardiePanels in a stucco finish. So far, so good. I bought some electric shears to cut it, and boy am I glad I did. The shears cut through it so effortlessly, and they're so light (5lbs) you can easily make cuts while precariously dangling atop your...

    ignorance is bliss (a rant)

There are egads of people who don't give a hoot about anything but their wallets. You know them, the "we want to do the least/spend the least amount possible, just enough to get the house sold" types. You might be one of them. I might be one of them. Problem is, this mentality has permeated...

what to grow above septic drain field?

We currently have plain old grass on top of the drain field. My husband heard somewhere that code requires grass, and that is the only thing you can grow above it. So far, we haven't been able to find anyone who "knows" about these things. I understand not wanting roots to corrupt the...

Electric Shears for Fiber Cement Board

Anyone have one? Amazon has a 7 amp Pacific International Shear SS404 for $269, and there's a 5 amp Snapper Steelhead SS304 manufactured by Kett on Ebay for $160, and there's a Malco FCS hand snip on amazon for about $30. I called my local rental center and they don't carry them, so I'm...

    toilet tank leaking into bowl

It's a slow leak. I've cleaned the slime off the flapper and other tank parts, what's my next step? Thanks!

    Corner bracing in balloon framing

To keep or not to keep? I've got the giant window header up, just sliced a section out of the corner bracing and set-in my jack stud. I left the former framing members in, as long as they were below my window sill height. Originally I was thinking I'd leave in the old, and add to it's...

    On-demand water heaters

Anyone know about these? A friend of ours put one in the new house he's building. He hasn't moved into it yet, but we expect he will in the next few months. It makes sense to me, to heat water as you need it heated, rather than keep a big tank full and heated all the time.

    Sill plate for large window

I'm about to build the sill plate for our new window, a 4' x 82" monster. I plan to double plate the sill, the two boards laying flat atop each other. I have a spare 2x6 that has no other use as of yet...So my question is: Can I use the 2x6 on top of a 2x4 for my sill plate? I was thinking...

Freecycle, GoodWill, and Habitat Stores, Oh My!

Just an FYI to share some sources for redo's on the cheap! freecycle.org Freecycle is a great site where you can give & get free stuff. Trash to Treasure kinda thing. Most places have a local site, and there are so many in operation now you're sure to find one near you. Folks post "offer's" and...
