I'm honestly not sure what kind of wall it is nor the baseboard, but I think the hole is about 1.5" across by 3" down

At my job I have been asked to repair a bit of damaged wall behind the baseboard. When I push the baseboard up to the wall there is a small gap between the two. What is the most effective way to fix this? Thanks for your help. Mike
