Ceramic tiling over concrete abutting hardwood

Here's how it went. We pulled out the floorboards and poured the sand-mortar slab on 3-mil plastic film over the particleboard subfloor. Overlooked making the expansion joint mentioned by Jaz but maybe the plastic will make that unnecessary. Then laid the tile as shown. True, it's a tiny job...

Ceramic tiling over concrete abutting hardwood

Another tile pro also said something similar -- though CB shouldn't be laid over concrete, it would probably be OK in a low-traffic area like this. But I'll still need to feed fuel into the stove, and walking over the hardwood floor next to the hearth, I hear a little creaking, which says...

Ceramic tiling over concrete abutting hardwood

Yes, slownsteady, they're 12'" tiles. I'd tile just the concrete, but the installer said 16" in front of the stove was needed, as the wood would be too close to the heat otherwise. Jaz, I'm aware backer isn't used over concrete and I'd gladly set the tile right on the concrete, but then how...

Ceramic tiling over concrete abutting hardwood

The photo shows a fireplace into which I've poured concrete (over the original uneven firebrick) to level the hearth with the main wood floor. A woodburning insert will be installed. I want to lay tiles over both the front of the concrete section and the first foot of the wood floor, as shown by...

    Slab crack

Thanks for the responses. Things are slightly more involved than my post indicated -- the handyman appears to have been protecting himself -- isn't just a quack. Work is still pending and we can't rent an electric walk-behind within 80 miles. But plan to carve out the crack with a diamond blade...

    Slab crack

Hi all, I've read all the related threads on this forum and would just like your opinion on a proposed solution to my problem. In a small barn => rental cottage I've just bought, the slab (about 25' x 15') is cracked in two directions, per the photos. The history is of a water leak from burst...

Re-laying ceramic tile over particle board on slab

Thanks, guys! I knew the pros would tell me how to do it _right_, but then it would be a first-class job in second-class surroundings. A gal at Menard's suggested PL Premium polyurethane construction adhesive, which comes pretty close to aureli's suggestion. Yeah, I KNOW this isn't how it's done...

Re-laying ceramic tile over particle board on slab

Hi! Wonder what you'd do about this. Whoever built the addition to my house maybe 30 years ago, over a slab, put a section of ceramic tile flooring, 8 x 4 tiles, by the front door (see photo). About 20 of these tiles eventually got loose and now I'd like to reset them. In pulling off the loose...
