    Air Return Vents

Ok, thanks! Unfortunately I recently discovered my walls have no insulation whatsoever (old house). So insulating this small area wouldn't make much difference. I appreciate the help.

    Air Return Vents

Are you suggesting I seal it with duct tape? It looks like that tape is for metal ducts. This gap is between pieces of wood. I wonder how well it would adhere. Also because of the shape, I feel it would be difficult to get a good seal with tape. My main question is, is there any reason not to...

Here's a zoomed out picture that might help.

    Air Return Vents

Thanks for the replies. It's not combustion air. I have a newer furnace with separate PVC piping for that. This is an older home (1940) that had duct work added at some point. So some of the ducts are cut into the walls. Basically it's just the space between the wall studs. I don't know...

    Air Return Vents

I noticed all my air return vents on outside walls have this gap, and it pulls some air from the outside. I'm thinking I would like to seal these gaps up with an expanding foam or something. Is there any reason I shouldn't do that?

    Possible water coming through siding

Thanks. I did buy a moisture meter. Unfortunately I realized there's a metal mesh in my walls (plaster) around the windows, and I think that's throwing off the meter. So it's hard to pinpoint if/where there is moisture. So I'm trying to understand if there are issues with the way my windows are...

    Possible water coming through siding

Can someone please tell me if I should remove the caulk under the windows in the 2 locations pointed out in the pictures below? The first is where the window meets the brick. The second is on the underside of the aluminum window sill where it meets the aluminum siding. Sent from my iPhone...

    Possible water coming through siding

Are you referring to the upper windows where the siding is? Or the lower windows in the brick? Or both? There didn't seem to be much moisture around the upper windows, but there was a lot both above and below the lower windows. (I think I need to get myself a moisture meter to check...

    Possible water coming through siding

Ok so I'm probably way off on the age of the siding, but it is old nonetheless. I'm thinking that since there is so much moisture above the windows, it must be mainly coming in through the siding above. If I were to replace the upper siding and whatever moisture barrier is behind it, wouldn't...

    Possible water coming through siding

Ok, I'm learning a lot here, thank you. So, here's what my "flashing" looks like above the windows. The first has concrete filled in and the second is right up against the brick so there's no gap. I see now that any drainage that might occur is being blocked. What do I need to do to fix this...

    Possible water coming through siding

Also, why is it a concern if the window trim is covered in metal? The windows all have an aluminum frame around them I believe. Sent from my iPhone using Home Repair

    Possible water coming through siding

I really appreciate the feedback. Regarding window installation, what am I looking for? I didn't notice any gaps where water would get in, but I'll have to take a closer look. As for the aluminum siding, should I consider replacing with vinyl and getting a proper moisture barrier in there...

    Possible water coming through siding

I recently discovered that I have moisture in my walls, and I think it might be coming though the aluminum siding, but I can't figure out where. Here is a picture showing where the moisture was found on the interior. It was picked up with a moisture meter. And here's a close up of the...

Old Insulation and Mold in Attic

I currently don't have any soffit vents - which is probably why there's mold in the first place. I will be adding them very soon. So, no attic fan?

Old Insulation and Mold in Attic

I have no soffit vents or any lower vents at all. Just 4 vents at the top of the roof. Also, my house is a bungalow, and the insulation on the knee walls goes all the way up to the roof, which would block any potential airflow to the upper vents. So I already pulled that down, and I plan on...

Old Insulation and Mold in Attic

Thanks! Yeah, the guy I had looking at it said that that insulation was installed backwards - the moisture barrier should be on the inside like you said. He seemed to know what he was talking about, it's just good to get some other opinions.

Old Insulation and Mold in Attic

I recently bought a house with a small mold problem in the attic. I was told it was the result of improper ventilation, and once I fixed that the mold would basically go dormant - or I could choose to have it cleaned. The mold is on the underside of the roof, and is not very severe. However...
