Replacing old T12 fluorescent light bulbs with LED ones (type A)

I believe in most places code requires the the fixture to be marked with an appropriate warning of type of bulb to be used as replacement. The bulbs I used were supposed to come with a sticker, but didn't. I bought at a real electrical distributor, so I asked them. Counter guy said he had...

    Epoxy flooring

Possibly your floor looks bad now from the adhesive residue, so I can understand the desire to do something. Really, the best option for a basement floor is to learn to like the natural grey of concrete. If it stays dry, epoxy should be fine. If it spends time underwater, I would not bet...

    Testing a bathroom fan

You could buy smoke candles to watch the smoke exiting. But if you see very little smoke exiting, what does that really tell you ? Is the flow restricted because the duct is restricted, the baffle is restrictive or the fan is too small ? I don't think it's even possible to buy a bathroom...

Construction & Structural Screw Length Curiosity

In my woodworking, I am often frustrated by the standard lengths of common wood screws. For example, if joining two pieces of 1/2" wood, I can either use 3/4" wood screws, which only give me a quarter inch of engagement, or 1" wood screws, which risks breaking through. I find wood screws to...

Shear Value #8 Screw- Any Idea?

Depends on the steel used for the screw, but load to shear a #8 screw will be towards the top end of the range you found. That screw will pull out before it shears in two. But keep in mind, that if this is for something where ugly or unsafe possibilities if it failed, an engineer or architect...

    Results of Sewer Line Scope

Stay tuned for more stress ..... when the seller comes back and says the real plumber looked at it and said everything is fine and nothing needs to be done.

    Results of Sewer Line Scope

A "major blockage" should be concerning. Sewer repairs are never cheap. But I agree with @dsteinhorn -- the big question is "does the inspector know how to interpret the images?" In particular, I question his finding of "pipe displacement". At the very least, I think you should pay a...

    Construction cardboard?

If I am seeing that correctly, You have a concrete foundation wall, and engineered joists on top of the wall. Grade level would have to be lower than that opening. The material you are looking for clearly is not rodent-proof, and even if you could find it, I don't see how you could get it in...

Extending a Strip Footing. Your take?

Structural changes to the house will almost certainly require a permit and inspection.

Extending a Strip Footing. Your take?

If you really think your foundation is inadequate, you need to have it reviewed by a licenced professional engineer. Yes, asking the question on an internet forum is a lot cheaper, but you are more sure to get a proper result with the licensed engineer.

Building boxes with painted 3/8" plywood

Reinforcements along the corner. Full length. Glue and either nails or screws. Sand away paint on areas to be glued. Angled reinforcements look better, but are a little more work.

    Problems with new driveway (crack)

Maybe there are other standards for driveway or concrete work, but in Ontario, we have a mandatory warranty program for new homes. The Ontario government formed a company Tarion to administer it. It may be helpful to compare what is and is not considered acceptable. The Tarion standard for...

    Problems with new driveway (crack)

In the first photo, you can see a control joint just a few feet away. Stuff happens. In a freezing weather, water can get in the crack, freeze and expand, making the crack bigger, repeat. You can put caulking (polyurethane or similar) on the crack, but I don't think I have ever seen a crack...

    Problems with new driveway (crack)

There is an old saying about 3 sure things about concrete: -it's heavy -nobody is going to steal if from you -it's going to crack Judging by how quickly it appeared, I would guess that is a shrinkage crack. Concrete shrinks as it cures. Shrinkage is more of a problem on excessively watery...
