I am trying to figure out what this blackish red fluid that is leaking from my outdoor AC Unit in IL. Everything is sound on the unit, no rodents or anything. My HVAC tech came out a month ago and everything checked out, with him stating it is running in great condition.

++ everything is running well with the unit. Cold air is blowing, no hard starts or issues that are obvious.

It might be the refrigerant. Newer refrigerants like R-401a leak red or pink fluid.

What does the fluid smell like? Could it possibly be condensation (i.e. water) mixed with the dirt and rust normally found near the ground where something metal is sitting outside?

smells like water/metals... didn't think about that.

Sounds like freon leak finder dye... or compressor oil...
