Anything to Put Over Paint to Protect it?

Is there any kind of varnish or lacquer that is recommended over paint, to protect it from scratches, a little water, etc? Like if you have stairs that are painted or a stairs railing/wall that has a top to it. Minwax says none of their products are recommend over paint.

Hey Curtis:
Top coating paint with varnishes and laquer will cause the paint to yellow a bit. It the yellowing is not a problem with your paint, I would recommend two coats of Polyurethane varnish with the oil base. Water based varnishes will wear off quicker than the paint would.
