Question 1: in a 'remodel' can lighting, you have the light and a junction box for connecting the wires; can you put a wire junction box with lid (to lengthen wiring), in a ceiling?
Question 2: in a 2nd story floor joyce, can you drill a hole large enough to pass thru a 12-2 wire?
Thanks
Rich

As long as it is easily accessible.

Question 2: in a 2nd story floor joyce, can you drill a hole large enough to pass thru a 12-2 wire?

You have the entire middle 1/3rd of the joist, and the drill motor with a 5/8" bit, so why deviate from a common, standard practice, just drill a 2nd hole.

Question 1 answer is no. All points where wires are connected have to be accessible.

If you want to mount a box into the ceiling and have the cover flush with the ceiling so you can open it up and get at the connected wires then the answer is yes.

Thanks Bud.
My questions came because we're opening up the kitchen and needed to move a light fixture. the wires are just thru the ceiling as there was a florescent fixture there previously.

There should have been a box there originally as well not just wires coming out a hole. You could mount a box there and then go off to a new location or put a light there and then another light where you need it. Sometimes there is extra wire also that is up there that could get you to a better location or you could go back the way the wire is coming from and set a light there and then on to the new one.

At some point you have to open up part of the ceiling to see what you have going on.
