better to fix or replace?

My upstairs is a half story with amber knotty pine paneling and beautiful doors that go with. The problem is that the paneling is not that beautiful. There seems to be areas where it looks like something has been spilled on it and no amount of scrubbing remedies it. Also the teens that were there have carved explitives in the wood, fairly deep and shot bb guns at it as well. I have two 10 by 12 rooms a 7 by 5 landing and a stairwell. Would it be better for me to just replace it than to use the denatured alcohol and hope that I could fill the swear words without making them stand out more?

I would clean, fill and paint or solid color stain for a uniform finish.
