The wasps went into a small gap between my siding and the chimney brick outside. The inner fireplace brick is wider than the outside brick, so they were somewhere between the sheathing and the fireplace brick. God only know what wood they chewed on, but I've already found evidence that they chewed through mortar to get inside of the fireplace box. Going to deal with all of that with a mason/chimney company.
For cleaning up, I'm worried about what this brown frass-like substance is. There is some in the pics above and below the hole they opened up in my actual fireplace box. The exterminator wasn't sure, so they declined to comment.
Appreciate anyone who can weigh in.
