The spray on stuff is terrible in my opinion. I tried to match my popcorn ceiling with it and ended up with a mess - it comes out in globs. The better bet is texture additive - just roll it on. But make sure to tarp everything down good as it splatters. But the end result was nice and I even had to blend into the existing ceiling. See http://www.drywallinfo.com/texture-repair.html
