We have a deck extending 10' from the second floor over the concrete patio area outside our ground floor laundry room door. Wife wants it covered to create a dry (and shady) area underneath. There is a little slope to the outside (but not much) so rain should not puddle (much, if any).
I am thinking of covering it with marine (treated) 4x8' plywood sheets with caulking at the joins, then painting it with a brown (to match the existing color) weather resistant paint.
We live in central Texas so we get really fierce sun in summer.
Questions are:
1) exactly what type sheeting might be best for this (not wedded to plywood)?
2) what caulking might be best for sealing the sheeting joins and how often will it likely need to be renewed?
3) what type of paint is recommended and how often will it likely need to be renewed?
4) should any special treatment be given to the edges of the plywood before fastening down to help prevent possible water damage?
In case there is a superior coating to paint for the purpose, brown color to match is not a necessity since few if any are ever likely to actually see this floor from upstairs. A lighter color would reflect the summer sun better in case there is a better choice
The existing 2x6' pine lumber is about 15-20 years old and is fully cured (dried) with approx 1/4" gaps between the boards. The gaps run from the wall of the house to the outside.
5) Do you recommend power washing the deck and repainting before laying the new material on top, or? And if yes, same or different paint (or coating) than that to be used on top of the plywood
Thanks in advance for your guidance
