In Canada, all the companies that produce forest products are represented by the Canadian Wood Coucil, whose web site is found at:
Welcome to CWC

The research division of the Canadian Wood Council is a company called "Forintek". Until now, Forintek's technical articles and PDF files created for public education were distributed amongst a number of different web sites operated by the forestry industries in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

Forintek has recently amalgamated all of those technical papers and educational materials onto a single web page:

Free Publications by Type

This one web page has excellent articles on using wood in construction, termite control, wood decay, causes of wood discolouration, and much more. Anyone wanting to learn more about discolouration and deterioration of construction grade wood (spruce, fir, pine) should download and read at least the following:

Understanding Biodeterioration of Wood in Structures. Forintek 26-page illustrated paper on the basics of decay (1998).
http://web.archive.org/web/20060428090412/www.durable-wood.com/pdfs/biodeterioration.pdf

Discolourations on Wood Products: Causes and Implications. Forintek fact sheet (8 pages, 2002).
http://web.archive.org/web/20060423125820/www.durable-wood.com/pdfs/discolor_eng.1oct02.pdf

...and snoop through that page for other material of interest.
