My house has an old (1950’s) era forced air heater that is is good overall shape. However, one duct on the second floor has begun blowing a very fine light reddish brown dust. No other registers seem to be blowing any noticeable dust.

We had the ducts cleaned but if anything, it’s made the problem worse. Looking down the duct with a flashlight it appears as if there’s a small hole in it.

Any suggestions?67AFC5E9-7D63-4AAC-A7A9-34BA9DA7A74E.jpeg383C4589-B13F-4803-B957-48C3B563B3A2.jpeg

Interesting.
My best guess is some kind of insect. Maybe call a pest control outfit to take a look.

Just a guess without being there to see it, long ago it was common to see the stud bays used instead of real ducts.
If there's Powder Post Beetles in the studs, there's going to be sawdust.

Yes, it is highly likely the work of Powderpost beetles. If you find small holes on the wall then it's already a sign that your wall has been infested. It's a good solution to call for pest control right away.
