Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, and I only own one gun bought new, but how many times would you need to fire this thing with a long string to be reasonably sure it's safe?

I guess this applies to any gun, new or used. It's extremely likely that it's OK but the consequences of not OK can be severe. Hand surgeons around here cost at least $4000 per hour.
 
I agree. Since that gun is unsafe, I will take it off your hands in a heartbeat. Don't wantcha to get hurt!
