I have an older metal window where the sash cord is broken. The sash cords are external and looks like coming from a horizontal box at the top of the window. There also isn’t any tension in the cord so I’m not sure if the mechanism needs repaired / replaced. Any idea how to repair it? One side is fine but the other isn’t pulling up. Thanks for any help! Here are some pics:

Welcome.
The "operating hrdw." is contained behind the top removable bracket, seen in photo #2.

Thanks. Any idea where I can purchase that hardware? The windows are probably 25-30 years old.

I'll have to look. I had a couple.

What I have found, is that as often as not the parts, in pieces, are available at "ACE is the place".

Seems your sash cord broke. You can get sash cord anywhere, right?

I can actually re thread the cord through the holder but the problem is there isn’t any tension. Something wrong with the hardware at the top of the window (spring perhaps?). Just hoping it doesn’t blow up on me. One cord is still good and the window opens / stays up fine. But I’m selling the house and the inspector recommended fixing it.

Do you have the lead weight within the window which needs to be restrung for equal tension on both sides?

This age of window didn’t have the cast iron sash weights and pulley system. They have a cord but there is some kind of a spring mechanism that pulls on the lower sash I believe.

Sash weights kind of went away in the 30s is my guess. At least around here.
