I had an hvac contractor install ductwork and decided that a floor joist was important enough to stand in the way of a return duct. He cut through all but about 3/4” of a 2x10. Needless to say, he’s not working in my house anymore.
I’m looking for a fix to hold me over until I can get a contractor out for a permanent repair. The home is 60+ yrs old so sistering the joist is not an easy option due to the sag over the years. The joist was cut right at the edge of the 3 gang girder or main beam. I was told that I could just put a 2x10x4 on the beam to support the joist. A second could be added for additional support for the joist to rest on.
I did just that but used regular construction screws not thinking about it probably not being a strong enough option. Can I run structural screws through them? I don’t have a pic with the boards up but have attached a pic of the damage to give an idea. Also attached a pic of the screws. Thanks for the help.
