My house lacks proper ventilation to the 2nd floor. Instead of new ductwork, can I just install a duct high on the ground floor wall that runs upward 2-3 ft to the 2nd floor? I'd use sound dampening and a ventilation booster fan. Would this to help equalize my temperatures?

In the old days 1850s-1920s or so they used to put a floor grate vent in the second floor and one on the ceiling below and just let the warm air go up. I have had two houses that had these and they work somewhat.

I haven’t seen this done in any new homes and it might be because of fire code I don’t know.

I took the one out in this house as it was updated to forced air heat and was no longer needed.

What is preventing you from running a separate duct to the 2nd floor ?

Might be simpler to install another HVAC unit or mini split upstairs ? I like ductless mini splits .

Wyr
God bless
