So a hole was created in the wall as a form of expression by someone.. I looked inside and the studs are black. They don’t look fungisy just like dirt. Idk what it is is it black mold? Any thoughts? Inside wall no water upstairs. Unless the roof leaked.

Two threads, same subject.
I didn’t think I was getting enough traffic should I delete one? Anyway it’s a load bearing wall in the middle of the house. I thought it was strange it looked like dirt. I even bought a mold test kit lol

I deleted the other thread for you

You need to cut some drywall and get it tested. Looks like old moisture to me. What city/state are you near.

So theres nothing on the drywall so thats kinda why i think its nothing but not sure. nothern iowa.

The first thing that I would do is rub a clean cloth over one of these studs and see if anything comes off on the cloth.

Maybe someone sprayed something on the studs before they put the drywall up.

Is the house new? New to you?

The fact that it is on the wood but the drywall looks brand new is strange.

It is very even also like it was part of the construction as mentioned above something someone sprayed on or a wood treatment etc.

The only other thing I can think of is sometimes with water damage or fire the framing is not damaged enough they strip the damaged drywall and treat or clean the framing and then put new drywall up. Has there been any history of such.

Yeah i thought it was strange the house was built i think in 1854?? and I bought this house 6 years or so ago. There is water marks in the closet down the wall. Been like that. I think the roof leaked because in 2013 the previous owners put on new roof. Someone told me sometimes studs get like that.

They do not look like modern studs as the corners are pretty sharp and not milled over like new studs. Could be 1854 or maybe sometime in between. My 1880s house studs have blackened also. Maybe someone added something also when doing the drywall. Here is a photo showing some old studs in my place. IMG_5031.JPG

The house was built in 1854... That shines a new light on things.

Is it possible the house was abandoned for many years and deteriorated? Then someone decided to completely gut and refurbish the house?

They did not have drywall in 1854. Drywall often has a production date stamped on the back of it. I can see some writing in one of your pictures. Can you see the production date?

A simple thing to do is measure between the drywall sheets and see if it is 3.5" or 4" old studs 80+ years old were mostly a full 4".

Another simple thing is look at the floor joists in the basement or rafters in attic and see if they look similar.
