House jack????

I call them house jacks.
The one with a metal pole with a screw end to make it longer.
Used to raise up houses when making a ground floor extension.
What is the correct name for it????

Lally column. Not used to jack houses but to hold them up as they are being built.

What you are describing as mentioned above is commonly called a Lally column named after the inventor John Lally. The first ones were filled with concrete and cut to length. They are not for jacking like most people use them for. The ones with the screws are made to be adjustable to fit different spacing but if a lift is needed a proper jack should be used and then the Lally put in.


Most of the time you see them with the screw at the top and I believe that is upside down. An old builder I know told me the screw end goes against the footing the adjustment is made and then when the floor is poured the screw is covered so to be never messed around with. I just checked and the Web page for Lally also shows them used this way.

It's something like a Lally jack.
But it's made for temporary use.
I didn't know they covered the bottom in cement.
But it makes sense. That way no one van fool with it.
