Leveling off the lawn

I finally have grass growing again on my lawn. When cutting it, I am noticing that there are ruts and divots in the ground causing it to be uneven.

How can I fix it? Winter is coming, so it may wait till next season.

It is called top dressing.


Get a fine top soil material without any rocks in it, called screened top soil. Fill in the low spots right over the grass a little at a time. Rake smooth or get a screen drag like a piece of chain link fence and pull it around to smooth the surface.

If you are going to scatter a little seed in with the mix now is a perfect time to do it. Get a good fall catch and it will look great next spring.

Maybe get a flail mower set low on it. It will make a mess but hopefully, get some of the lumps out.
The fill/top dress and reseed.
