microwave smells like a bowling alley

my wife microwaved something the other day and read the directions wrong and ended up having a meltdown. now the inside of the microwave is brown and smells like an ashtray for the past couple of weeks.

Put a baking soda paste (don't turn on) and wipe out the next day.
