We had our ceilings painted and in some cases re texured due to water damage. In about 50% or more of the ceiling's where the paint and crown molding meet there are now long cracks. Did the painter do something wrong? I also have some cracking under some area's(5%) of the crown molding where the painters did not touch-maybe due to settling?

Seems that would have more to do with the crown molding than the paint. Maybe it's not solidly attached and allowing some movement.

Welcome Crodagnon:
I can imagine the ceiling being wet and drying out causing the crack but I don't have a clue on the other that was not repainted. About all you can do now is caulk the crack and repaint the crown moullding.
