My husband and I are planning for a new arrival at the end of the summer, and need to do some work on our somewhat finished attic space. Currently there is paneling hung off 2x2's. We want to replace the paneling with drywall for more insulation and noise reduction, and we were hoping to do as much work as possible to save on the expenses. Well anyway, my question is, is is okay to hang drywall on the 2x2 studs?

How thick are the rafters under them? Be safe, G

Why bother to remove the paneling? With the added covering you have more insulation. I'd prefer to glue the sheetrock right onto the panels, but nails/screws are ok. Assumedly, the 2X2s are up tight and strong and the original panels are secure, etc.
