Noisy portable AC units

I recently went through 2 portable AC units for my bedroom that just doesn't cool off. They cooled it off, and didn't make much noise when the fan was on, but as soon as the coolant kicked it it sounded like a jet engine in my room. I don't have a big bedroom, so I'm curious if there's any portable air conditioning unit that is at least somewhat quiet?

What’s the make and model of the units touve tried. Or more importantly, what noise rating were they advertised as having?

I think that generally, portable AC's are noisy. I have a 14000 BTU SPT in my living room in the summer. It's rated at 55dBA and it's loud. I have a second 8000 BTU LG in the bedroom with a similar rating and it's too loud to sleep with in a small room. I'm saving my pennies for a split system.
