I want to paint some HVAC ductwork in my basement. I'm wondering if I need to do anything to prepare the surface or if there is a particular type of paint I should use.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hello RDWJ and Welcome to the Forum:
HVAC ductwork is usually made of galvanized steel and needs to be washed with equal parts of vinegar and water before painting (some paint stores have a more elaborate treatment). I would wait until the heating season starts because of the condensate of air conditioning which would make the paint peel. I wish you the best with your project.
