Painting inside of particle board cabinets

I have particle board kitchen cabinets, with what appears to be a white laminate on the outside. However, the inside is raw particle board. Is there anyway to spruce this up? Would primer and paint do anything for the texture of the inside shelving? How do I best attempt this task??

More expert opinions to follow, I'm sure. But my first concern is that the liquid part of the paint would swell the particle board

"texture of the inside shelving" ? Unfinished particle board is normally smooth. Do you have a picture ?

If I had to do I'd be using an oil based primer, then two coats of enamel paint.
You white primer and paint to make it easier to see what's in the cabinet.
