I am having a pavilion build on our patio. The vaulted ceiling will either be cedar or pine. Leaning toward pine as it is much cheaper. I realize cedar holds up better in the long run but I have heard good things about pine. It will be sheltered from rain. It will be stained or painted if we go with pine. My questions is, should the pine be pressure treated or not? Someone I talked to recently did not think that it needed to be pressure treated because of the location where it will be installed.

If it is protected by a roof, it doesn't need to be pressure treated. I did a ceiling in a screened porch I built about 20 years ago using T&G pine, we stained it and sealed it with water based poly as I recall. It is holding up well and looks great.

Another aspect is the texture that the pressure treating leaves, and the resulting aesthetics.
